How to Determine a Bowling Score

    • 1). Write down the number of pins that were knocked down with the first ball of the frame. Write that number in the smaller box in one corner of the frame. If all the pins are knocked down -- known as a strike -- color in the box completely, or just make an “X.”

    • 2). Watch to see how many pins are knocked down with the second attempt. Write that number at the top of the outer frame, and write the total in the bottom part of the square. If all remaining pins are knocked down -- known as a spare -- make a slash in the top part of the box, and leave the total blank.

    • 3). Whenever a strike is bowled, wait until that player's next two balls are thrown before calculating his score. Add the total of that frame to the previous frame’s score, which is a 10 for the strike. For example, if you throw a strike on the first ball of the game, you have 10 points. If you knock down five pins in the second frame, and then four more, that total of nine is added to the first frame’s score, for a total of 19, then the nine is used again for the second frame, for a total score of 28 in the second frame. A spare works the same way, except you wait only until the next ball is thrown, instead of two.
