- Arthrotec is two medications in one, according to Pfizer. Arthrotec contains diclofenac, which is the NSAID component of the drug. This reduces swelling and pain associated with inflammation caused by either type of arthritis. Arthrotec also contains misoprostol, which coats your stomach and helps to prevent the formation of ulcers, while still letting the medication be absorbed into the bloodstream.
- Arthrotec blocks prostaglandin in your body, which is at the root of pain and swelling induced by arthritis. However, prostaglandin also helps protect your stomach from damage (among other functions in the body). That's why Arthrotec has misoprostol---to help protect your stomach while treating your arthritis pain at the root cause.
- You can only receive Arthrotec with a prescription, so consult your doctor if you think Arthrotec may be right for you. Arthrotec is taken in pill form and, as with every medication, should be taken exactly as your doctor prescribes. Take with a meal to help reduce the effects of an upset stomach.
- As with any new medication, you may experience some mild side effects when you first begin to take Arthrotec. These will most likely include nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain or gas. These symptoms typically dissipate after the first few weeks, but consult with your physician about them regardless. Arthrotec has been reported to increase the sensitivity of sunlight in some users, so avoid excessive sun exposure, just in case. Arthrotec has also been linked to certain heart conditions, with the likelihood increasing with duration of use.
- Consult your physician about any and all medications and supplements you take before beginning to take Arthrotec, as your doctor will know of any contraindications or interferences. Report any and all side effects you experience while taking Arthrotec. Do not take Arthrotec while pregnant, trying to become pregnant or while nursing. Do not consume alcohol while taking Arthrotec.
