- 1). Chisel out any loose pieces of the concrete with a cold chisel and hammer. Create smooth edges around the chip. Follow any crack lines extending outward from the chip and chisel them, too, so that all visible damage will be repaired.
- 2). Sweep away the loose concrete debris with a broom or brush. Remove any residual concrete dust with compressed air, if necessary. The area must be completely clean before repair.
- 3). Mix the patching compound, water and other additives required, according to the product's instructions. Different compounds require different additives at different ratios, so follow the product directions exactly. Mix only enough compound that you can apply within the next 15 minutes; otherwise, the it could dry before you apply it.
- 4). Apply concrete bonding adhesive on the edges of the chip and any cracks, using a paintbrush. This will keep the patching compound in place over the damage and prevent it from spreading or running.
- 5). Apply patching compound to the chip with a mason's trowel. Fill in the edges first, working toward the center with circular motions to evenly distribute the compound. Continue adding compound until the chip is full.
- 6). Scrape the flat edge of the trowel over the top of the chipped area to remove any residual patching compound. Allow the compound to dry for at least 48 hours before doing any more work on the floor.
