- Developed by General Motors and manufactured under the GMC brand, the 2500 model truck is part of a truck building history that goes back to 1918. The 1988 models where released with multiple options that include rear or four-wheel drive and regular or extended cabin. Specifications for the four-wheel drive models vary across the two drivetrain options and two engine choices.
- There are two engines available in 1988 four-wheel drive model 2500s. The 4.3-liter V6 has 160 horsepower, 235 foot-pounds of torque, displacement of 4,294-cubic centimeters, bore of 4 inches, 3.48 inches of stroke and a 9.3:1 compression ratio. The 6.2-liter, V8 option has 126 horsepower, 240 feet-pounds of torque, 6,212-cubic centimeters of displacement, bore of 3.98 inches, stroke of 3.82 inches and a 21.3:1 compression ratio. A four-speed automatic overdrive transmission is standard on all 2500 models.
- All models have front headroom of 40 inches and front legroom of 41.8 inches. Extended-cab models have rear head and legroom of 37.5 inches and 32.1 inches, respectively.
- Dimensions vary between regular and extended cabin options. Regular models have length, width and height of 212.9 inches, 76.4 inches and 74.3 inches, respectively. Extended cabin models have length, width and height of 236.9 inches, 76.4 inches and 74.5 inches. Respective wheel bases for regular and extended models are 131.5 inches and 155.5 inches.
- Fuel economy for the 6.2-liter engine is EPA estimated at 17 miles per gallon, mpg, for city driving and 22 mpg on the highway. A 4.3-liter model fuel economy is rated at 16 and 19 mpg, respective to city and highway driving. All models are outfitted with a 25-gallon fuel tank.
