The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) was first established by the National Defense Act of 1916. This act of Congress, which was signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson just prior to the United States' entrance into World War I, provides for military officer training in university settings. ROTC is the primary provider of officers to all the branches of the U.S. armed forces. - Texas A&M University is the oldest public university in the state of Texas. The university's history of training military officers dates back more than 130 years through its Corps of Cadets. Affectionately known as the Aggies, officers commissioned through Texas A&M have served during every American conflict since the Spanish-American War. The U.S. Army ROTC program works with the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M to develop the university's military leadership training, which includes two years of basic military training that can be taken without incurring a military commitment. Army leadership training, including team building skills and field training exercises, occur during the cadet's junior year. Senior-year ROTC coursework focuses on the transition from cadet to commissioned officer.
