EKG technician is short for electro-cardiographic technician. An EKG Tech administers cardiovascular tests on patients by using the electrical impulses that are transmitted by a patient's heart.

Job description of an EKG technician

A basic EKG test involves the technician putting electrodes on different parts of a patient's body such as the chest, arms and legs to obtain a print out for a physician to read in order to analyze and diagnose issues such as an irregular heartbeat. These basic tests are common and are often done before many kinds of surgery as a routine checkup with any patients advanced in age or having a history of cardiovascular problems.

Duties of an EKG technician

- Obtaining identification and medical history from patients

- Setting up the test according to general protocol or to the specifications of the ordering physician

- Explaining the test to the patient

- Attaching electrodes or leads to the major areas of arterial blood flow (chest, arms and legs)

- Monitoring the patient and equipment during the testing period

- Noting the cardiograph report as the test progresses as well as the patient's blood pressure and heart rate

- The technician may note sections of the test print out that should be reviewed by the referring physician.
