- Remember her reaction when she first saw the wedding portraits? Recreate that moment by booking a photographer to take your photo at a park, the beach or even in your home with an elegantly white backdrop. If a photographer is out of your budget, surprise your new bride with a trip to a mall photography studio. You can go for a straight portrait of you and her looking happy, or dress in time period old-west garb.
- They say that the fastest way to a man's heart is through his stomach. For your one-year anniversary have a catered breakfast in bed. Many caterers will deliver a breakfast of your choice from their menu with a small cake and hot coffee or tea. Serve with mimosas. Secretly chill a bottle of champagne the evening before. In the a.m., pour in a glass and stir in orange juice. If a catered affair is a little too fancy for his taste, cook up your own eggs Benedict, bacon and home-fried potatoes.
- A tree is a great gift for any married couple. Do your research since certain trees thrive better in different regions of the country. Think of the future. Will they have kids? Purchase a tree they can eventually hang a swing from. A weeping willow will provide plenty of shade. Pine trees grow quickly and give lots of privacy to any property. Maybe they're city dwellers and don't have a backyard. There are plenty of potted bushes and plants that can flourish indoors with or without sunshine.
- Keeping with tradition of one year being the paper anniversary, consider giving your friends tickets to a concert or play you know they would enjoy. For close friends that you spend a lot of time with, gift-wrap some fun board games like Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly or Pictionary. Or for literary types, give a gift card to an independent book store. The gift card may be plastic, but books are made of paper, literally. The most thoughtful paper gift of all, however, could very well be a donation in their name to a charity your friends really care about.
