Types

• Many areas require fire pits to be made from a nonflammable material, such as concrete, steel or brick. Surround the patio fire pit with one of these materials if it is located partially underground. If a screen is required, wire or steel mesh are good choices for this covering.
  
  

Burning

• Check with your local fire department to see if a burning permit is required. Before using your fire pit, you should also find out whether there are restrictions on burning during certain hours. Even in areas where no permit is required, a ban may still be imposed from time to time if conditions are extremely dry.
  
  

Space

• Place your fire pit in an appropriate location. Many fire departments require that this device be located at least 25 feet from buildings or fences. Remove all flammable materials from an area around the fire pit of at least 15 feet in diameter. Keep a fire extinguisher within arm's reach of the pit, in case the wood throws sparks while it is burning.
