- 1). Remove the drill bit from the chuck, if one has been inserted. Open the chuck as wide as it will go. The chuck can be opened either by hand or with a chuck key.
- 2). Remove the screw on the inside of the chuck. The screw is reverse-threaded, meaning it must be loosened by turning to the right instead of the usual left.
- 3). Insert the base of the drill into the stationary vise and tighten the vise to hold the drill in place.
- 4). Insert the short end of the Allen key into the chuck and then tighten the chuck. The key should be inserted so that it is horizontal, with the end accessible to you. The chuck must be tight on the Allen key.
- 5). Set the drill into low gear, and set the clutch to high to avoid slipping.
- 6). Hit the Allen key straight down with the hammer to loosen the chuck. You may have to hit the Allen key with a great deal of force to loosen the chuck. Once the chuck is loose, it can be threaded and removed.
- 7). Insert the Allen key into the new chuck and tighten. Thread the new chuck onto the drill, which is still in the vise.
- 8). Hit the Allen key with the hammer in the opposite direction to tighten the chuck.
- 9). Insert the screw at the bottom of the chuck until it is tight.
