Ballycastle - Co.
Antrim is a small town in Northern Ireland, rich with history and magnificent views.
Ballycastle lies on the north-eastern tip of County Antrim and is right across from Rathlin Island.
This beautiful seaside town welcomes international tourists and its fellow countrymen, especially during the summer months, for special activities and celebrations.
Ballycastle is probably best known for its Ould Lammas Fair, which has been celebrated since the 1400s.
This fair is currently held on the final Monday and Tuesday in August.
It boasts sales of produce and livestock, and unique local delicacies, such as the yellow man (hard toffee) and the dulse (dried seaweed).
Another fun gathering that brings people to the vicinities about Balleycastle is the Rathlin Run.
People from around the area run competitively on the hilly island off the coast of Ballycastle.
There are other great sites to visit near Balleycastle, including the Giants Causeway (a wonder of the world) and Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge, where a rope bridge hangs high above jagged rocks and beating waves.
This cozy town also boasts many historical events.
The town was built around a castle that housed Sir Randal MacDonnell in 625.
Now the town center, the remains of the castle was replaced by the Holy Trinity Church (1756), which was built by the landlord at the time, Hugh Boyd.
Ballycastle also features more recent history.
Guglielmo Marconi was an Italian inventor, who made radio contact in 1898 with Rathlin Island from Ballycastle, as a series of tests in his efforts to develop a radiotelegraph system.
There is a tribute to him and George Kemp (Marconi's assistant), located at the Ballycastle harbor.
