Canadian Immigration - Taking the Plunge!

Before immigrating to Canada, it is always useful to do some research before hand.
Getting acquainted with the local laws, driving habits, weather knowledge, reading basic banking laws, understanding on how to build your credit score will help.
Here are some of the areas, you should be prepared before landing in Canada.
  • If you have a driver's license from your home country, make sure that you obtain an English translation (if it is not in English).
The English translation has to be attested by the Ministry of transportation.
If this is not possible, you may have to go to your embassy upon landing to have it translated or even certified.
But it is important that you bring your license otherwise you will be treated as a new driver, which means you will have to wait for almost seven months to one year before you can take the road test.
It is also advisable to get acquainted with the Canadian driving rules before landing.
Seat belts are mandatory in Canada.
Moreover, small children need to have car seats or booster seats.
  • When bringing money into Canada, make sure that the draft/certified cheque is in Canadian Dollars and not in US dollars.
A US dollar draft will take two to three weeks whereas a Canadian dollar draft takes five days to clear.
Whatever money you bring into Canada should be declared at the time of landing in Canada.
  • It is always a good idea to bring warm clothing from your country.
However, it is recommended to purchase snow boots and down jackets from Canada.
  • If you have children, make sure you get their immunization record.
Transcripts and school reports are also essential.
  • If you are bringing cell phones into Canada, make sure that it is either a world phone or at least a tri band.
If it is not a tri band phone, it does not work properly in Canada.
Voltage/socket convertors also come in handy.
  • Book your travel tickets in advance.
A lot of airlines offer nonstop flights to Canada.
Long transit times can be very tiring.
  • If you have plans to rent a car in Canada, make sure you make early reservations.
This will ensure that you get a competitive rate and also a choice of your car.
If you have a large family, renting a van is advisable.
