How to Keep a Dog From Climbing a Chain Link Fence

    • 1). Fence in a large enough area so that your dog has room to run, roam and play. If you fence in an area that's too small, your dog might get bored or anxious and try to climb the fence. Your chain link fence should give your dog an area of at least 10 feet wide.

    • 2). Install a chain link fence that's tall enough that your dog won't be able to climb over it. This will depend on the size and jumping ability of your dog. A puppy won't be able to climb a chain link fence, and in most cases, the puppy will be accustomed to the fence and will not try to climb it once full grown.

    • 3). Install a chain link fence that has barbed wire arms. Of course, don't actually install barbed wire on the fence. Instead, use plain wire or fence fabric. These materials can be strung around the angled steel extensions that sit on top of the chain link fence to prevent your dog from climbing the fence.

    • 4). Entertain your dog while it's in the yard. Since your dog can see through a chain link fence, activities, such as a new person to meet or a squirrel to chase, are easily seen. Your dog may want to climb the fence to get to something more interesting or to search for something interesting. Stay in the yard with your dog to supervise it and to play. Give it toys and treats. Throw a ball or just run around with your dog. A well-exercised, entertained dog is much less likely to try to climb a chain link fence.

    • 5). Get your dog neutered or spayed. Dogs that aren't fixed will go to great lengths to seek out a mate, including climbing a fence. Fixing your dog can help eliminate this problematic behavior. It will make your dog calmer and help control the pet population.

    • 6). Train your dog. Learning simple commands like "stay" and "sit" can help keep your dog from climbing your chain link fence. Use positive reinforcement to train your dog, and seek help from a professional trainer or animal behaviorist if your dog has any serious behavioral issues.
