- 1). Unscrew the gas cap and make sure there is fuel in the tank. Add fuel if it is empty.
- 2). Lift the engine cover to the up position. Turn the digital multimeter on and set it to the voltage setting. Place the black test lead on the negative post of the battery and the red test lead on the positive post. If there is no voltage reading, replace the battery.
- 3). Remove the oil dipstick by twisting it off. Clean it well with a rag to prevent dirt from getting into the crankcase. If the oil is low, add enough so that it falls between the "Full" and "Add" levels. Too little or too much oil can be harmful to the engine.
- 4). Check the transmission fluid level. The dipstick is located directly behind the seat. Unscrew it and wipe it with a rag, insert it again and then pull it out to get an accurate reading. If it is low, add more fluid.
- 5). Examine the spark plugs on each side of the engine block. If they appear dirty, pull off the plug boots with a pair of pliers. Remove the plugs with a spark plug wrench. Use a wire brush to clean off the plugs and inside the boot. Reinstall the plugs or add new ones.
- 6). Make sure the PTO switch is in the off position and that you are sitting in the seat when starting the Cub Cadet. The mower will not start if the PTO switch is in the on position. Also make sure the brake is fully depressed when starting the mower.
- 7). Check the air filter by removing the wing nut that holds the cover in place. Remove the cover and loosen the metal wing nut that holds the element cover. Pull out the air filter and replace it if it is dirty.
