How to Get Rid of a Smell in a Sewer Drain in a Basement

    • 1). Pour sewer-cleaning powder down each of the drains in your home and flush with water. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to determine how much powder to use for each drain. Remember to also flush the sewer-cleaning powder down the toilet.

    • 2). Remove all cloth materials in your basement that smell like your sewer. Launder the items and replace them. In some cases, the cloth materials will soak up the smell.

    • 3). Spread baking soda over basement carpets or rugs. Let the baking soda sit on the carpet or rug for at least three hours to absorb all of the sewer smells. Vacuum up the baking soda and repeat the process if the smell still remains.

    • 4). Mix 1 cup bleach with 1 gallon of hot water.

    • 5). Clean the basement walls and hard floor with the bleach mixture and a sponge. The bleach will help remove the smell of sewage that may have seeped into the walls or floor.

    • 6). Rinse the bleach solution from the wall with a sponge soaked in clear water.

    • 7). Dry the walls thoroughly.

    • 8). Fill a bowl full of white vinegar and place it in the center of your basement. Leave the bowl there for at least 24 hours. The vinegar will help neutralize any remaining sewer smell in your basement.
