You can make a boys room fun or classy. One theme to consider when decorating a boys room is an undersea theme, which conjures images of sharks, submarines, treasure chests, pirates, and fish. Science and adventure are favorites of boys and they are both present in an undersea theme. If you are planning on turning your sons room into an undersea world then try these ideas.
A Blue Backdrop
Blue is the perfect backdrop for an ocean themed room, so try an aquamarine on the walls. If you want to add more depth and texture to the walls, try sponging on various shades of aqua, light green and blue to make it feel as if you are really in the ocean. Enhance the effect by putting the lightest blue onto the ceiling. You can also use different sized sponges to vary the effect. An easy-to-wash acrylic paint with a satin or semi-gloss finish is perfect for a kids room.
Fishes on the Walls
Murals are great visual features and kids love them. You can paint fish, shells, and coral onto the walls. If you are very adventurous, paint an entire undersea picture with a sunken ship and a coral reef full of fish. You can find inspiration for your mural from books or images from the internet. Practice mixing colors before you start the finished project. You can also purchase decals and put them all around the room on furniture, mirrors, windows, and walls. The great thing about decals is that you can remove them without damaging the furniture or walls.
Accents
Be creative with the wall art. You can hang fiberglass replicas of fish and other sea creatures for an older childs room. You can also make a headboard out of plyboard using a saber saw or a jigsaw. A dolphin and a submarine are rather simple shapes. If you want to try something more difficult make an octopus. You can paint the wood cutouts to be as realistic or as cartoonish as you wish.
Display plastic sea creatures, which you can purchase at any arts and crafts or model store, on a shelf or on your son's desk. If the room is for a younger child, then pile stuffed sea animals on the bed and dresser.
You can save money by looking for fun accessories at a thrift store. You may find old nautical items at a thrift store that are great for an older child's bedroom. You can also hang sea themed prints and consider repainting old chairs, stools, and a desk to match the room.
Bedding
In order not to make the room too busy and keep the walls and accents the center of attention, choose simple bedding. Try solid or striped bedding. Bright blues and greens would look great in a younger kids room, but if you are looking for a more sophisticated look try navy blue, white, and red. Try matching the curtains to the bedding in order to create a more cohesive look.
Throw pillows are excellent accents for adding color and interest. If it is a younger childs room go with brightly color fish, submarines, and octopi on blue pillows. Try anchors or yachts on more subdued colors for a teenagers room.
