Dealing With Large Corrupt PST Files - A Primer

The Personal Storage Table file in Microsoft Outlook contains all the emails and attachments and other files and configurations of the user.
However, when the file exceeds the limit of 2GB, it becomes corrupted and inaccessible by the user.
Lets see how to overcome the error.
Microsoft Outlook is the most widely used email client in the world.
Mostly, the application is used by an organisation to manage to emails exchanged within.
The client, due to the massive amount of email accounts, has to run on the Microsoft Exchange Server or the Microsoft Sharepoint Server.
All the data which is transferred, received or maintained on the client is stored on the PST file or the Personal Storage Table file.
This makes accessing the data much more easier, apart from making it portable.
However, sometimes when users try to access the file, the following error message greets them: "Errors have been detected in the file.
Quit all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox Repair Tool.
" This means that the PST file will not be opened by the application as it has become corrupted or damaged.
This has happened because the PST Outlook storage file has exceeded its 2GB limit, which has been predefined by the application.
Any PST or OST file for that matter, which goes beyond the prescribed limit, becomes corrupted and damaged and is unable to open by the application.
Even after you run the scanpst.
exe application, the file is not repaired.
For PST recovery, you might want to look into the steps that have provided by Microsoft in order to help you deal with this problem.
In order to fix the problem, you would first need to download the tool provided by the company on its Outlook support page.
This tool will allow you to create a truncated copy of the 2GB PST file.
When the tool is downloaded, extract the 2gb152.
exe file in an empty folder and select the following program: Pst2gb.
exe.
Run the program and select the file that needs to be truncated.
After, click on the 'Create' button and select the name and the location of the file before clicking on the 'Save' option.
Now, you would have to specify the amount of data you want to truncated on the smaller PST file.
Start by 25 MB, and if it works, try truncating it by 15 MB.
If that allow works, try truncating the file with 5MB.
This allows you to retain the maximum amount of data on the new and smaller PST file.
However, if the 25 MB limit does not work, try truncating the file by 35 MB for PST recovery.
Once the truncated copy has been created, run the scanPST.
exe tool on the truncated copy in order to fix it.
This process might take some time owing to the size of the file.
When the tool is finished repairing the file, try to open on Outlook.
If the file opens then every thing went well, if it does not, then repeat the whole process all over again using the original damaged PST file.
If the file opens, it is recommended that you further compress the file just to be sure.
Do that using the in-built tool provided by Microsoft.
You can also use third party software like the Advanced Outlook Repair tool for PST recovery.
