How to Sharpen a Tree Shredder

    • 1). Find out from the manufacturer's instruction manual how many times you can sharpen your tree shredder's knife blades before they need to be replaced. Keep a tally each time you sharpen the knives in the back of the instruction manual.

    • 2). Check that the knives need to be sharpened. If the tree shredder starts to produce much larger chips, or lumps of wood, then it's usually a sign that the knives have become dull and need sharpening. Some tree shredders stop working completely when the knife blades need sharpening.

    • 3). Place the tree shredder on a level surface. Make sure the power supply is switched off and remove the spark plug to stop it from starting up accidentally.

    • 4). Remove the shredder's intake chute. Unscrew the chute support brace bolts with a wrench, turning in a counterclockwise direction.

    • 5). Unscrew the bolts on the knife drum's safety cover with a wrench, then slide off the safety cover.

    • 6). Unclamp the rotational knives from the drum or disk. Methods vary between different makes of tree shredder so always follow the manufacturer's instructions. Wear heavy-duty protective gloves before attempting to remove the knives.

    • 7). Sharpen each blade with the supplied sharpening device. Use long, opposing strokes down each side of the blade to sharpen the edge. If your shredder does not include a supplied sharpening device, you can use a diamond whetstone sharpening tool in the same way.
