- 1). Install a quick release-skewer on the rear wheel of the bicycle if it does not already have one. A quick-release skewer secures the wheel to the bicycle frame better than a standard axle rod. Depending on your particular bicycle, the process for doing so will differ, so check your instruction manual if you are unsure how to do it.
- 2). Pump up your tires to the recommended amount of air, usually around 100 psi.
- 3). Place a bike trainer directly behind the rear wheel of the bicycle.
- 4). Stand on the left side of the trainer. Lift the rear wheel of the bicycle and line up the ends of the quick-release skewer with the skewer receivers on the bike trainer. Both ends of the skewer should fit snugly inside the trainer, like plugs in electrical sockets.
- 5). Tighten the skewer receiver until snug and the bicycle stands up on its own. Most trainers have a tightening knob on only one side of the trainer, but some models may have a tightener on each side.
- 6). Look at the back of the trainer to ensure the roller of the trainer is pressed snugly against the bicycle tire. If necessary, twist the knob clockwise on the back of the trainer until the roller is pressed against the tire. Tighten it just enough so that you cannot move the bicycle wheel with your hands.
