Doggy Door - Why And How To Choose One

A doggy door lets you keep a pet dog and not worry about having to take it for early morning or late night walks.
A doggy door is a small rectangular or square hole cut out into a door frame that lets your dog come in and go out as and when it pleases.
It provides freedom to pets and also helps in keeping your house clean if your dog is trained to do its business outside.
Then he can go out whenever needed.
It usually consists of a rubber flap which closes back after your dog has passed through the door.
Having a doggy door helps a lot.
Pets don't like to be tied up and if let free use all their pent up energy to tear up cushions, books, sofas etc and mess up your house.
You can get out of this dilemma by installing a dog door.
The door will allow your pet to go out and play whenever it wants to and it won't make a mess inside your house.
There are a few tips you can follow before choosing a doggy door.
First of all, the size of the door needed.
Remember it just needs to be big enough for your dog to squeeze in and out comfortably.
Make it too big and it could end up being a security threat by letting in intruders.
Make it too small and it won't be of any use to your dog.
So first of all make sure that you select a proper door according to your dog's size.
This can be done by measuring the standing height of your dog up to its shoulders.
Once this is done the next thing to do is to select the door on which you want to install the doggy door.
Usually you should select that door which your dog uses the most to come in and go out of the house; most probably a door leading to a fenced yard.
This way it won't take your dog too long to understand the use of it.
If you install it on a rarely used door your dog won't even realize that it's there and the door won't be of any use.
One of the major issues related to doggy doors is security.
This comes more into play while designing a door for larger breeds.
For larger breeds the door needs to be big which in turn can easily let in intruders.
In such cases electronic dog doors are preferred.
These doors are electronically activated by a chip in the dog's collar.
Some high end doors also come equipped with infrared sensors.
But cheap magnetic lock aluminum frame doors are also available which provide enough security in case of smaller breeds.
A secure door also helps keep out strays and other animals.
Many a time burglars use doggy doors to open locks on main door.
This can be avoided by making sure that the main door lock is good and secure enough to withstand tampering.
Another way is to use wall doggy doors that are installed on to walls rather than on doors.
So doggy doors provide freedom to you and your pet.
They prove to be very useful if used properly.
But even while using a doggy door do keep a watchful eye on your pet from time to time.
