- With increased energy, money and water efficiency, tankless water heaters are in demand. If you are considering a tankless water heater and gas is your main source of energy, there are a few ventilation requirements to ensure healthy air levels free of harmful gases.
- Determine if your gas supply is natural gas or propane. You must confirm that your gas line will provide the appropriate gas pressures for the new tankless water heater. Depending on the model of water heater, the following amounts of gas inputs are needed for the tankless gas water heaters: up to 118,000 BTU for RTG2-42 models, up to 145,000 BTU for RTG-53 models, and up to 199,900 BTU for RTG-74 models. (Consult your gas supplier)
- A chip (RTG42 High Altitude Chip) is required for gas water heaters above 3,280 feet altitude.
- For you are buying a gas-fired on-demand water heater, you must buy category III stainless steel (UL1738 certified) venting, not "Type B". Confirm any additional requirements with your local building code officials. Gas venting kits are usually not sufficient for tankless water heaters.
- Some gas tankless water heaters may still need an electrical connection. Confirm with the heater's description details.
