In China, breakfast food varies greatly among the different regions. One food that is common throughout much of China is congee, or a watery porridge. Another breakfast food enjoyed by people in several regions of the country is the so-called "deep fried devil." These are twisted strips of dough, similar to crullers, that have been deep fried. American-style breakfasts are very rare in the country, although Western influences are seen in Hong Kong. Some residents of that city eat fried eggs, toast, doughnuts and other traditional American breakfast foods. These items are not typical to China and have become popular there as Americans have traveled to the city over the past decades. - People in northern China typically eat a breakfast that includes steamed breads or steamed buns stuffed with meat or vegetables. People in this region tend to eat more wheat than elsewhere in China, and wheat noodles are common at breakfast. They also regularly have soy milk or tea with their breakfast.
- In Central and Eastern China, people often eat a soup for breakfast made with fried tofu or cellophane noodles. Plain rice porridge is also popular with a variety of side dishes, including salted duck eggs or pickled vegetables. People in these regions also often wrap foods in leaves, like lotus or banana leaves. An example of this type of food is steamed rice with chicken wrapped in a lotus leaf.
- People in southern and western China enjoy eating thick rice porridge for breakfast, as well as rice noodle rolls, fried noodles and rice cakes. They also enjoy dim sum, which is a variety of little snacks. Dim sum can be steamed, broiled or deep fried and most are savory. A popular example of dim sum is a rice flour wrapping filled with minced, steamed shrimp.
