- 1). Look at your room and determine where your eye is drawn. Find the focal point. Take note of dark corners, natural lighting and reflective surfaces.
- 2). Decide where you want the attention drawn in your room. If you want a piece of furniture, such as a set of shelves or a piece of art, highlighted consider accent lighting. Halogen accent lights run about $8 each. They are small enough to place in inconspicuous places, but the effect they create can add to the design of a room. Track lighting is another good accent option.
- 3). Place lamps in the dark corners. Place an lamp on top of a table or desk in a dark corner. Consider using a free-standing lamp. There is an unending list of options for lamps. Choose lamps that complement the accent colors of the room. A soft light bulb inside the lamp will illuminate the corner without overwhelming the room.
- 4). Create a centerpiece in your room layout using the furniture and accessories and centering your main light source above this centerpiece. The centerpiece does not need to be in the center of the room. A simple hanging lamp is a solution. Hanging lamps usually have the advantage of not having to be electrically wired into the ceiling, as a cord can by strung down the wall and plugged into a socket.
