Collecting art is indeed an art in itself. Each person connects with a piece of art differently, deriving their own essence, gratifying their own juxtapositions. From finding a rare piece of art from the remotest corner of the world, surrendering to the allure of art and aesthetics, Anita and Sudhir Choudhrie, a well-known business family in London, have accumulated one of the most impressive collections of art.
A labour of love and immensely diverse, the collection itself is primarily concentrated on Indian contemporary artists. Some of the most impressive names from the subcontinent are associated with the Choudhries' personal collection. However, as art spans beyond borders, the family has several significant international pieces as well, including works of Ontario Mussollini (Italian Photographer) and Antonio Blanco (Spanish Artist).
The collection boasts of several masterpieces that including paintings by Lt. Mr. Maqbool Fida Hussain, who was also close to the family. His Maria series dedicated to his lady love Maria Jaroslav Zuroksa, is now a proud accession of their collection. Besides this, his most seminal works on Ramayana, Mahabharata, Mughal-e-azam, along with paintings of other notable artists like Paresh Maity, Rameshwar Broota, and Jayashree Burman make a rich and deep collection.
The family's efforts are not only limited to augmenting their collection. Anita and Sudhir Choudhrie, like true art enthusiasts, work to fortify Asian contemporary art which is still in its nascent form. The Stellar International Art Foundation was established Stellar International Art Foundation was established in 2008 and took as its basis the private collection of the Choudhrie family.
Currently the Foundation comprises over 600 works by an array of Indian and Western Contemporary artists ranging from painting to sculpture.
The collection began in the 1970s when the Choudhrie family began to purchase works of art. This led to intimate relationships with some of India's most important contemporary artists including M F Husain, Paresh Maity and Jayasri Burman. At the point the Foundation was created, the collection changed direction to focus on Western and American Contemporary Art, selecting important works by the most important contemporary artists working today. The Foundation seeks to promote artists within the collection through international exhibition, loans, publications and events. Examples of this have been St. Moritz Art Masters, Switzerland. Many of Hussains' unseen works were made accessible to the public along with other masterpieces. In addition earlier this year a series of exhibitions in India were held to promote local Indian art in their native settings.
Anita Choudhrie, the baton bearer of all these efforts acknowledges her creative passion and she values her relationship with art and finds immense warmth and comfort in its folds.
