Things You'll Need
Instructions
1Find a suitable location for the spotlight. Good spots are free of obstructions such as branches and large rocks and allow for the light to shine up the pole, illuminating only the flag and not surrounding trees or buildings.
2
Dig a small hole for the base of the light, if necessary, and dig a small trench from the light to the closest power outlet. The trench should be a minimum of 6 inches from the surface, but no deeper than a foot.
3
Put the lamp in place and plug it into the power cable. Bury the cable in the trench. The cable should be either dedicated outdoor wire or an outdoor extension cord that is properly shielded and insulated against the elements. Avoid using wire with cracks or breaks in the outer casing, to reduce the possibility of short circuits from corrosion.
4
Connect the cable to a timer, so the light will turn on and off automatically. The timer should be rated for outdoor use and secured to the siding close to the power outlet or to a stake near it.
5
Plug the power cable into the socket, through the timer. Verify that the setup works and that the light functions properly. If not, check the bulb and the cable, and make sure the timer is properly set.
6
When the light works as you want, fill in the trench containing the wire. Make final positioning adjustments to the spotlight, and set the timer according to local sunrise and sunset tables.
