Rules on Writing an Argumentative Essay

    • An argumentative essay, also known as a persuasive essay, intends to take one side of a debate or argument as correct by supplementing it with several supporting points before drawing a conclusion. Writing an argumentative essay requires a clear thesis statement, relevant support and clear transition. Your supporting arguments should connect thematically to one another to unify your argument.

    Thesis Statement

    • Your thesis statement sums up the subject of the essay, your stance and your intended presentation. Never interrogate a reader with your thesis--instead, make a clear and assertive point. List your argument and supporting points. In addition, avoid using loaded language. According to Kennesaw University, loaded language consists of words that carry strong emotional connotations. Attempt to appear unbiased.

    Supporting Arguments

    • For each supporting argument, write two paragraphs or more, depending on subject depth. Include facts and statistics to prove your point and cite your sources using the appropriate citation method.
However, don't let your whole supporting argument consist of a quoted or paraphrased source. Tie it into your own thesis. Also, use more than one source to support each argument.

    Transitions

    • Transitions connect your different supporting arguments to one another. Without adequate transition, your essay will appear choppy and incoherent, thereby weakening your position. For example, if you finish one supporting argument, you could transition to a counterargument thus: "However, critics of this position believe that..." and then outline a counterargument and your own rebuttal.

    Opposite Representation

    • Although playing devil's advocate in your argumentative essay remains an optional step, consider referencing opposing points to your own supporting arguments. If you acknowledge opposing arguments, you can draft a rebuttal and further strengthen your position, according to Yorba Middle School.
