- 1). Check to make sure the circuit breaker that controls the HVAC unit is turned on if the unit is not running at all. The circuit breaker is in your home fuse box. Make sure it is in the "on" position. If not, flip the switch to the "on" position. Troubleshoot further if the breaker switch automatically turns off as soon as the HVAC unit turns on; this means there is a short in the system.
- 2). Make sure the fuses in the fuse box are good by unscrewing them from the fuse box and inspecting the center of the fuse. If it is broken, the fuse needs to be replaced.
- 3). Inspect the thermostat of the unit. Replace the batteries if the display does not show any numbers, if the unit has a digital display.
- 4). Send a friend to stand by the HVAC unit while you control the thermostat. Slowly turn the thermostat up, listening for a clicking sound from the device. The thermostat clicks when engaged. Have you friend call out when he hears a sound from the HVAC unit. This means the thermostat is running properly. Troubleshoot further if there is no sound.
- 5). Turn off the electricity to the unit if it is on and unscrew the thermostat base from the wall with a screwdriver. Notice the positioning of the wires coming from the back of the thermostat. Most heating and cooling thermostats have four wires. Disconnect the wires and test for continuity of the wires using a voltmeter.
