- Wearing appropriate attire is very important when dining in Morocco. To show respect for your host, dress formally. If the meal is being served in someone's home, leave your shoes at the door as another sign of respect. Signal to the host that you don't wish to dirty his floor.
- While there are situations in which men and women dine together in Morocco, this isn't always the case. If someone is highly conservative, his dinner party may be for one gender only. To avoid confusion, read the invitation to determine whether your spouse's name is included. If there is no invitation, ask the host if the meal will be for mixed genders.
- In Moroccan culture, it is customary to wash your hands before a meal. A basin will be brought to the table before the meal so all guests can wash their hands. The basin will reappear after the meal so diners can wash up again.
- In Morocco, dining is a communal activity. Food is served at a round table and all food is placed in one communal bowl. Individuals eat from the sections of the bowl closest to them. Similarly, water is served in a communal basin from which all guests drink.
- When eating in Morocco, don't use a standard Western utensil set. Instead, scoop food with your thumb and the first two fingers of your right hand and bring it to your mouth. You can also use a piece of bread to scoop the food, if you wish. Diners use only their right hand when eating and drinking in Morocco, keeping their left hand resting on their lap.
