What to Know About Oslo Airport

Oslo Airport is situated in Gardermoen in Ullensaker approximately 35 kilometres northeast of Oslo, the capital of Norway.

-     History of Oslo Airport
Oslo Airport was originally a military airport built in the 1940's by Germany occupying forces. The airport later became a charter airport to the main airport in Oslo called Oslo Airport, Fornebu after the Second World War. In 1998 the airport in Fornebu closed and became main airport serving the city current airport after being expanded and modernised.

-     Incidents and Accidents
On 14th February 2006 a SAS Commuter Fokker 50 suffered considerable damage after its landing gear collapsed while standing at the gate. Passengers and crew had not yet boarded the aircraft when the accident occurred.

On 4th December 1994 an Air Team Cessna 208B Grand Caravan cargo aircraft crashed into nearby woodland after take off. This was because the aircraft was not de-iced before taking off in icy conditions. The pilot was the only person on board the flight and was killed in the accident.

-     Airlines at the Airport
Many major airlines provide flights at Oslo Airport to domestic and international long and short haul destinations. Norwegian Air Shuttle has the most domestic and international services at the airport and there are charter flights to holiday destinations throughout Europe. The airport is Norway's busiest with over 19 million passengers in 2010.

-     Things to do at the Airport
There are plenty of general stores that sell books, newspapers and magazines as well as stores that sell clothes, fashion accessories, cosmetics, electrical goods, photographic equipment, travel equipment and much more. There are also pharmacies at the terminals. At departures after the security checks there are duty free shops that sell electronics, watches, liquor, cigarettes and other duty free items. There is also a selection of cafés, restaurants and bars at the airport for hungry or thirsty passengers. Oslo airport also has plenty of ATMs situated around the terminal building. The airport also has a foreign exchange counters, travel insurance kiosks and and tourist information offices providing hotel bookings and general information regarding the region. There are also VIP and business lounges at the airport for passengers who may need some peace and quiet or to do some work before a flight.

- Accommodation Close to the Airport
There is a nice selection of Oslo Airport hotels for passengers who want to stay nearby to choose from. The Park Inn Oslo Airport hotel is situated at the airport next to the terminal building and has 3 stars. The Radisson Blu Airport Hotel is situated just 100 meters away from the terminal building at the Airport and has 4 stars. Bookings for these hotels can be made on the internet before arriving at the airport. All of the airport hotels can be booked on the internet prior to arriving at the airport.

- Getting there and Away
There are regular buses from the Airport to Oslo city centre as well as other destinations in the surrounding area. There is an airport express train that can connect passengers from the airport to Oslo city centre as well as to other destinations. There are also private hire taxis available outside the airport terminals. Car hire is also available at the airport from Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Autovia and many more. Car hire can be arranged on the internet prior to arrival at the airport.
