- 1). Get experience as a mechanic. Know how to service and repair all different makes and models of cars by completing an educational program specifically focused on automotive repair. Spend one to two years after training working under the guidance of an experienced mechanic, preferably one with certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Apply for ASE certification for yourself at the end of your first year of work experience. Being ASE-certified can assist you in getting customers once you open your own shop.

Utilize an administrative assistant or receptionist to answer the phone, schedule appointments, and handle billing and payments to avoid interruptions as you service and repair vehicles. Consider using the services of a freelance bookkeeper if you have no training or knowledge in managing the financial aspects of a business.
