- 1). Turn off the power at the source for the circuit you are working on. Double check the power is off by touching a non-contact voltage detector to the wire's insulation.
- 2). Loosen a joint in the conduit to expose the internal wires. This is done by loosening the two gland nuts on either end of the compression filling and pulling the joint apart.
- 3). Identify the number of conductors inside the conduit by counting each wire. Read the printed wire gauge on the insulative cover of the wires. The gauge typically looks something like this: 14/2 or 12/3. The first number represents the diameter or gauge of each wire and the second number is the number of conductors inside the individual wires.
- 4). Follow the link in the Resource section to the chart for conduit size verses number and size of wires. Use this information to determine if the conduit can handle another wire you want to run through it. If it can't, installing another run of conduit is your only choice.
