- Perform a flat wash to create an overall mood for the painting. This is good for sky areas or large buildings that need a solid color. Wet the entire area where the wash will be applied and mix in the pigment to fill the entire area. The pigment should be applied from the top of the paper down to the bottom with each pass slightly overlapping the last. After passing over the entire wash area, allow it to dry so that it blends together.
Thin out the pigment on each pass with a little bit of water to create a graded effect where the color gets lighter. Use this technique for skies. - Wet-into-wet is the application of pigment onto a wet paper. Applying pigment with a wet brush onto a wet layer or wash will create soft shapes that are undefined and can be used to create distance and perspective in the painting. Wet the paper with a large brush and paint your small objects into the water. The more water applied to the paper the blurrier the image.
- Apply pigment with a dry brush technique to create more defined shapes on the paper. Take pigment on a lightly dampened brush and run it along the paper to create your shape. Do not wet the paper before hand. The strokes of the brush will be sharp and are good for defining people, animals and buildings that are in focus.
