- Relative visas for a spouse or children under the age of 21, category 2A visas, are typically given a high priority when it comes to processing. As of October 2010, visas for this category are being processed in as little as six months, but the average is about eight to 12 months.
- Children over 21 years of age fall into a different visa relative category: 2B. Visas for individuals in category 2B are typically not given as high a priority as those in 2A. As of October 2010, the U.S. State Department is still processing visas from 2005 in this category.
- Even if an individual is a relative, there are no guarantees they will receive a visa. Certain behaviors and past events can make an individual ineligible to receive a visa from the United States, including submitting fraudulent documents, health-related grounds, criminal activities, such as money laundering, or security-related issues, such as known involvement with a terrorist group.
