- 1). Remove the pick guard, electronics, all screws and hardware from the body of the guitar. If you have to disconnect any of the electronics--the pickups, volume and tone controls--be sure to take note of how to rewire the electronics when reassembling the guitar.
- 2). Remove the neck by loosening and removing the screws on the back of the Stratocaster that attach it to the body. The body of the guitar should now be free of all hardware and electronics, and separate from the neck.
- 3). Use a palm sander or sanding block fitted with 50 or 60 grit sandpaper to begin sanding away the top surface of the paint. Be gentle; pushing the sandpaper forcefully into the finish could damage the wood and is not necessary to effectively remove paint. If using a power sander, keep the sandpaper moving so as not to sand one area too long and create dips in the wood. Pick up the sandpaper frequently to clean the work area and paper of dust and paint particles.
- 4). Sand the inner horns of the Stratocaster's body and the harder to reach areas by hand or with a sanding knife. Remember to work evenly and gently.
- 5). Switch to 100 to 120 grit sandpaper when the wood of the body starts to be revealed through the paint. Sand thoroughly to remove any last traces of the paint. This is also the point in sanding when you want to smooth out any dips or inconsistencies created in the surface of the wood. Work deliberately and with even pressure.
- 6). Switch to 150 to 180 grit sandpaper to bring a smooth finish to the wood. For areas that won't seem to smooth out, apply wood sealer, let dry, and then sand smooth. The final surface should have no inconsistencies or areas that feel rough to the touch.
