"Mortal Instruments" TV Show to Air on ABC Family
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones didn't exactly light the box office on fire in the summer of 2013, but fans of the film -- or at least the Cassandra Clare books upon which it was based -- will have another shot to see the plight of monster-fighting angel-human hybrids in the story played out on screen. This time, however, the action will be on the small screen. Disney-owned ABC Family has ordered a 13-episode TV adaptation called Shadowhunters, the name given to the angelic heroes who battle demons and other creatures of the dark.
There's no cast yet (I wouldn't count on Lily Collins or any of the main stars of the movie signing up) or any word on at what point in the chronology of the book series the show will pick up, but presumably it will return to the beginning to re-tell the story previously presented in City of Bones. There is plenty of material upon which to build a TV show, with not only six Mortal Instruments novels, but also three prequel novels collectively called The Infernal Devices plus another THREE trilogies planned by Clare to complete what's termed The Shadowhunters Chronicles. Production will begin in May, so it's conceivable we could see Shadowhunters on TV in the fall.
