Side Effects of Metamucil in Dogs

    Uses

    • Metamucil is considered a "bulk forming laxative," which comes in both powder and capsule form. It is used to treat inflammatory bowel disease, anal gland disease, constipation and other conditions.

    Availability

    • Metamucil is available either through a veterinarian's prescription or over-the-counter drug or department stores.

    How It Works

    • Metamucil is made from the coating of plant seeds. It works by passing through the intestinal system without being digested. When it reaches the colon, it absorbs water and swells, which results in the stool becoming softer and easier to pass. However, it may take up to 72 hours to work.

    Dosage and Administration

    • Dogs should receive 2 to 10g of Metamucil every 12 to 24 hours, as needed. A good way to get your dog to eat it is by mixing it with its food. Remember that the powered form of Metamucil is 3.4g per rounded teaspoon.

    Side Effects

    • The most common side effect of using Metamucil in dogs is flatulence, or gas.

    Warnings

    • Metamucil is not recommended if your animal has chronic problems with bowel movements. Make sure to keep large quantities of water available to your animal. Also, stop using Metamucil and contact a veterinarian if your dog begins vomiting.
