How to Sharpen the Blades on a Brush Mower

    • 1). Print a copy of the protractor at the website www.ossmann.com/protractor/.

    • 2). Refer to Table 3-1, General Troubleshooting, in the Bush Hog operator's manual (www.bushhog.com/ContentFiles/Documents/Manuals/GT48.pdf). The information in the guide is applicable to most brush mowers, regardless of model or manufacturer.

    • 3). Raise your mower deck as high as it will go. Stabilize it with four jack stands.

    • 4). Push blades back until they rest on the center pivot. Put on your wraparound eye protection.

    • 5). Use your right-angle grinder with a 24-grit abrasive wheel to bevel the blade edges to between 45 and 55 degrees. Use the thinner angle for finer cutting and the thicker angle for heavier brush.

    • 6). Use a tape measure or ruler to ensure that you grind the second blade to the same thickness. Check the edge angles against your protractor printout. The closer to identical the blade angles and thickness are, the better balanced the blades will be.

    • 7). Remove jack stands. Lower your mower deck and do a short test run. If the mower has excessive vibration while in use, repeat Step 4.
