- Base cabinets are the wooden structures underneath the kitchen countertop. The standard height of the cabinet, which includes the cabinet door, is 34 1/2 inches, according to the Ask the Builder website. The 34 1/2-inch height includes a base that usually is set back a few inches to form what's called a toe-kick.
- The base cabinet's height is influenced by the countertop. A thin countertop may only add half an inch, while a thicker countertop may add up to 1 1/2 inches or more. This thickness generally makes the total height somewhere between 35 and 36 inches. Thicker countertops add more height.
- Those builders who plan on using parts of ready-made cabinets as part of their own cabinet building project should be familiar with other standard measurements, especially if they plan on building the cabinet doors while buying ready-made cabinet frames or shelving. While the standard depth for kitchen base cabinets is 24 inches, the width does not have a set measurement. Rather, the width can be anywhere between 12 and 48 inches, often increasing in 3-inch increments.
- The toe-kick is visible underneath the base cabinets. Builders can use several methods to cover or decorate this area if desired. While some use paint to make it blend in, others use various methods to make it stand out. These methods include using wallpaper, lighting, ceramic tiles or simply leaving the toe-kick the same color wood as the cabinets.
