- 1). Plant a row of bushes or shrubs on the ground along the front of your porch for natural color and privacy. Depending on personal preference, select bushes identical in height or alternate between tall and medium bushes to create a natural screen with a lofty top. Alternatively, install a lattice screen in the ground along the front of the porch and plant climbing vines.
- 2). Mount long rectangular planters or flower boxes along the inner, outer or upper edges of the porch railing. Fill the planters with quality soil and grow a variety of tall or trailing plants. Depending on personal preference, grow the same type of plant in the containers along the porch for a uniform effect or grow one color or plant type in each container for bursts of color.
- 3). Mount evenly spaced hooks for hanging baskets along the roof of the long porch. Grow trailing plants with long, flowering vines to provide splashes of fresh color and privacy. Ensure the hooks are strong enough to support the weight of the baskets.
- 4). Line the floor of the porch with evenly spaced planters or potted plants. Place a potted dwarf tree or shrub on each side of the door to highlight it from a distance and project a cheerful note to visitors. Use ornate pots that are larger and brighter than the others used on the porch. Place planters or pots with fragrant flowers on porch steps.
- 5). Install dramatic lighting to illuminate the porch in the evening. Depending on personal preference, install track lights along the walkway leading to the porch, spotlights in the ground in front of the porch or rope lights around the porch rails and spindles.
