- Clean the bore in the steering knuckle with automotive solvent and shop rags. If rust is present, sand the bore lightly with 220-grit sandpaper. The steering knuckle is the joint that attaches to the axle with the ball joints.
- Place the lower ball joint straight into the bore. Use a ball joint press to push the ball joint into the knuckle. You may need to re-align the cup to completely install the joint flush with the knuckle. Install the snap ring to secure the joint.
- Repeat the procedure for the upper ball joint, using the correct adapters for the press.
- When installing the knuckle, place the camber adjustment stud on the upper ball joint facing out for positive camber and facing in for negative camber. Positive camber is when the tops of the front wheels tip out slightly compared to the bottom. If the tires are wearing slightly on the inside, install for positive camber.
- Install the nuts on the upper and lower ball joints finger-tight. Tighten the bottom nut to 35 foot-pounds of torque. Tighten the top nut to 100 foot-pounds. Advance the top nut until the hole lines up for the cotter pin. Tighten the bottom nut to 100 foot-pounds.
