- 1). Remove the screws that hold the shower drain's cover in place using a screwdriver Remove the cover as well, giving you free access to the drain body and drainpipe below.
- 2). Insert a drain key, with the textured end pointing up, into the drain body. Turn the dial on the drain key so it expands to the walls of the drain body and sits snugly in place.
- 3). Grip the textured end of the drain key using an adjustable wrench. Turn the drain key counterclockwise using the wrench, unthreading the drain body from the drainpipe.
- 4). Insert your fingers into the drain pipe and push it to one side slightly, enabling you to remove the rubber gasket that sits between the drainpipe and the bottom of the shower pan. Examine the gasket and drain body for signs of damage or wear.
- 5). Purchase a replacement drain body or gasket if you find signs of wear or damage. Move the drainpipe to the side using your fingers once more, and then slide the rubber gasket back in between the bottom of the shower pan and the top of the drainpipe.
- 6). Roll plumber's putty into a rope using your palms. Apply PVC primer and then cement to the inside of the drainpipe and the outside of the drain body. Thread the drain body back into the drainpipe by hand, and then use the drain key and wrench to tighten the drain body in the pipe until you feel resistance.
