Definition: A biennial is a plant that completes its life cycle in two years. In a biennial's first year, it will start as a seed and grow roots, stems, and leaves. It will go dormant (die back) over the winter. Once spring arrives, it will grow again, much larger than in the previous year, and flower or fruit, produce seeds, and die.
