Wash the terra cotta planter with soap and water and set on a towel to dry thoroughly. Drying times will vary depending on size and humidity. - 2). Paint the inside and outside of the pot with a water-based sealer. Terra cotta is porous, and this will prevent moisture from seeping through the walls after you've added your plant to the finished pot. If moisture were to leak through the walls, it would damage the mosaic you've created on the outside of the pot.
- 3). Use the putty knife to apply tile mastic to the outside walls of the terra cotta pot and proceed to create your mosaic.
