Remedies for Knee Swelling

    R.I.C.E.

    • Apply the R.I.C.E. method to your knee. (R) est the knee by getting off it. (I)ce the joint with a cold pack for 20 minutes at a time, then allow a 10 minute warm up period. Apply a (C)ompression bandage to the knee to discourage swelling and provide support. (E)levate the knee to above hip level by propping it on pillows. This combination of treatments is effective on a vast majority of knee swellings. Improvement should be seen within 24 hours or you need to seek medical attention.

    NSAID's

    • Take a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin. These drugs have a direct affect on swelling, and can reduce pain and stiffness as well. Be sure and check with your doctor for dosing and side effects.

    Heat Therapy

    • Alternate the cold therapy with heat therapy. Take a warm bath and soak the joint. If there are jets in the tub, use them to massage the joint and encourage blood flow. Once you have dried off, climb into bed and apply a cold pack. This alternation of temperatures encourages circulation.
