How to Repaint the Exterior of a Clawfoot Tub

    • 1). Brush the exterior of the tub with a dry scrub brush to loosen and remove excess dirt and dust.

    • 2). Scrub the exterior using hot water, mild soap and bristle scrub brush. You may need to scrub hard to make sure all dirt and residue comes off the surface. Rinse the exterior surface by wiping it thoroughly with cold water and clean rag or sponge.

    • 3). Scrub the surface with pumice powder if grit or grease remains on the surface. Wet a small scrub brush in water and dip the bristles in the powdered pumice. Scrub the surface to remove the remaining residue. Rinse the surface thoroughly with cold water.

    • 4). Lay drop cloths on the floor of a well-ventilated area for painting. Invert the claw-foot tub onto the drop cloths so the feet are pointing to the ceiling.

    • 5). Fill in any deep grooves or welts with auto body fiberglass putty using a putty knife. Let the putty thoroughly dry before painting the tub.

    • 6). Spray the exterior surface of the tub with a rust-inhibiting primer. This product is available in a spray can for easy application. Be thorough with applying the primer, so there are no missed areas on the tub. Let the primer dry for 48 hours before painting.

    • 7). Paint the exterior of the tub with a rust-inhibiting spray paint. Use an even back-and-forth motion to get an even application. Let the paint dry completely and apply a second coat. Let the paint dry for at least five days before moving and installing it into a bathroom.
