Progress has been made in neonatal safety but much needs still to be done. A research agenda needs to be formulated to examine the neonatal population and its unique safety issues. Educational programs must incorporate patient safety across the lifespan in curricula. Nursing needs to more fully examine worker fatigue, including nurses and nurse practitioners. Safety concerns of parents need to be addressed if we are going to create safe environment for our tiniest patients.
