- 1). Secure your high school diploma or equivalent. Based on guidelines of the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), you will also need to have a bachelor's degree to become a Registered Dietitian. You will have a high school diploma or equivalent in order to enter a bachelor's degree program. High school students interested in becoming a dietitian should take courses in health, mathematics, science and communications.
- 2). Enroll in and earn a dietetics degree. This is a four-year degree program that focuses on foods, nutrition and biochemistry. Entering is degree programs that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) is advised.
- 3). Enter an internship through CADE. This is completed once you have received your bachelor's degree in dietetics. You will be performing a minimum of 1200 hours of clinical practice under faculty supervision. This is a requirement in order to become registered and can run anywhere from six to twelve months.
- 4). Earn state licensure credentials. Each state has regulatory guidelines needed to be met before practicing. You can find your local agencies' contact information and policies at cdrnet.org.
- 5). Pass the national exam administered by the CDR. This is necessary to earn the title of Registered Dietitian. The exam is a computer-based model that tests on food nutrition, food service systems and nutritional screening.
- 6). Maintain status as a Registered Dietitian. The CDR requires that you complete ongoing professional education courses and pay their annual registration fee.
