How to Fine Cook With a Mortar & Pestle

    • 1). Select a recipe that uses fresh garlic cloves and several herbs and spices. Obtain whole herbs and spices for your recipe. This will allow you to get the most flavor from them.

    • 2). Add all your spices for the recipe to the mortar. Use the pestle to crush them by firmly rolling it in a circular motion. You can also use an up-and-down motion if the spices need more pressure.

    • 3). Remove the herb and spice mixture from the mortar, and set it aside. Add the garlic and pulverize it with the pestle, using the same motions, until it becomes paste-like. Add the spice mixture and garlic to the recipe as directed.
