- 1). Prepare to clean the fuel oil spill. Close all vents or doors that would allow the vapors to enter your living area. Ventilate the area as much as possible with windows or doors. Put on thick rubber gloves and old shoes that can be disposed of when finished.
- 2). Place a layer of absorbent material, such as cat litter or sawdust, over the fuel oil spill. Allow the layer to sit over the spill for 10 minutes.
- 3). Shovel the absorbent material into a heavy-duty garbage bag.
- 4). Fill a bucket with 1 tablespoon of an oil reducing liquid dish soap per 1 gallon of water, as hot as you can stand to touch.
- 5). Dip a sponge or cleaning brush into the cleaning solution. Scrub all surfaces that have come into contact with the fuel oil, such as walls and floors.
- 6). Repeat all of the steps until all of the fuel oil and residue is removed. The process may need to be repeated several times.
