How to Prepare a Tax Return for Free

    • 1). Visit Free Fillable Forms. The online fillable forms are an electronic version of the paper forms provided by the IRS. With the online forms, you are able to complete the 1040A, 1040EZ or 1040 federal returns. Click "Start Free File Fillable Forms" to begin.

    • 2). Create a free account to begin with your tax return. You will be requested to enter a username, password and email address and then accept terms and conditions before accessing the fillable forms.

    • 3). Select the type of form you need for your tax purposes. You may choose between the three 1040 forms: 1040A, 1040EZ or 1040. The forms are not available for state, only federal.

    • 4). Enter in all the requested information, including personal tax information, W-2 amounts, any itemized or standard deductions or exemptions when prompted.

    • 5). Save your file using the Disk Icon in the upper right portion of the file if you need to come back to your return later. You may also File an Extension, Start Over and View or Add Forms by clicking on the appropriate icons.

    • 6). File your tax return electronically directly to the IRS. You will need last year's adjusted gross income as a form of identification before e-filing. Add banking information to the return in the requested area if you wish to have a direct deposit of your refund or a direct debit of any balance due. If you do not wish to add banking information, you will receive a refund through the mail or be prompted to send in a check with your balance due to the IRS with form 1040V, which you may find and print with your return to send in to the provided address.

    • 7). Hit the "Print" button to print out a copy of your tax return for personal use and filing even if you are sending it in electronically.
