- 1). On a piece of paper write a title for the span chart at the top. This should define the type of wood and specific application for the joist. For example: "Maximum Span for Ceiling Joists made from Spruce, Pine or Fir Wood."
- 2). Make several columns on the paper to include wood grade, wood size and various joist spacing distances.
- 3). Draw as many rows as necessary to include the various wood grades and joist sizes.
- 4). Fill in the predetermined information from the building structural lab using a method that assures accuracy. Double check that the information was placed in the chart correctly.
